The federal Older Americans Act requires every state and territory of the U.S. to establish an Office of the Long Term Care Ombudsman that identifies, investigates and resolves complaints relating to seniors in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.  The Office of the Long Term Care Ombudsman is located in the State Department of Revenue under the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority. Supported by federal and state funds, the Office has five staff to cover over 300 facilities statewide. The Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority is responsible for the selection of the person who fills the classified position of the Long Term Care Ombudsman.  The Long Term Care Ombudsman is not a politically appointed position.
